    Name: Kurogane Shougo, "Han"

    Gender: Male

    Age: 17

    Height: 5"11' (180cm)

    Weight: 155lbs

    Hair: Black, artfully styled

    Eyes: Brown, red-orange contacts

    Ethnicity: Japanese/Korean

    Birthplace: Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan

    Character Story:

Shougo was born into a lower middle income family to a salaryman and his wife, a locally born South Korean, or Zainichi Korean. Due to his mixed parentage, Shougo can speak both Japanese and Korean. His mother originally wanted to name him Han, but Shougo's father, in a rare moment of assertiveness, named him Shougo after his own father. As a result, Shougo's mother and the local Zainichi Korean community refer to him as Han when speaking Korean. Due to his quiet and intimidating personality, he always attracted attention from the more "delinquent" crowd of children, whom he formed lasting friendships with. Girls tend to find him scary and avoid him, something that he has mostly come to terms with despite lamenting in a comical manner with friends. Since his parents were too poor at the time to afford luxuries like videogames or other toys, he mostly spent his time playing sports, particularly soccer and baseball, and learning martial arts. Surprisingly, judging the crowd he hung out with, he spent a lot of his childhood at the library, reading children's books.
A turning point occurred when Shougo was only 8 years old and he witnessed his gentle and kind father being savagely beaten by Yakuza debt collectors. In order to protect his mother and father, he set out to become the strongest in the area. By middle school his reputation preceded him as the "iron-fisted" Shougo (Kurogane is Japanese for iron) who had conquered all the delinquents in the adjacent schools. The local Yakuza group took notice of him after he roughed up the toughs that had shaken down his father all those years ago, sending more men after him, but they continually underestimated him, allowing Shougo to defeat them with his skill at one-on-one fights and ambushes, since these were his streets they were on. At the age of 15, the boss of the boss of Shougo's neighborhood's Yakuza met him personally and called a truce, promising not to harm his family or friends' families on the basis of his respect for Shougo's honor and determination.
Another determining factor in Shougo's childhood is his childhood friend, Hanamura Misaki. Misaki lives above a flower shop, which her mother runs by herself (her father died in a car accident when she was very young) and became friends with Shougo when they were infants. She is his connection to humanity, and is the reason why he doesn't take the standard gangster attitude towards other people and life in general, and why he tries to excel in school. She's also one of the only girls who doesn't view him as a possible pawn or step for advancement or runs away when he walks into a room. While not romantically involved with each other just yet, the intent is there within both of them, though neither have acted on it. Regardless, Shougo would do anything for her if she asked.
Currently, Shougo attends Kuroki Industrial High School, a school known for its tough fighters and excellent technical and engineering programs. Shougo makes above average grades but only because of the effort he puts into studying. He's in his 2nd year of high school and is already studying hard for college entrance exams, with his eye on a mechanical engineering position. He's the top fighter in the surrounding areas, having "conquered" the neighboring rival schools after his ascension to head "banchou" of Kuroki Industrial.

    Character Personality:

Shougo is a soft-spoken and slightly aloof person. He also comes off as rather emotionless, a trait that unsettles some. The only emotion he ever really shows to any degree is happiness; he is an optimist and his smiles are genuine and warm. People easily mistake him for not paying attention to them because of his naturally spaced out expression, but he has a habit of narrowing his eyes which makes him intimidating. He’s well-mannered to adults who treat him politely but doesn’t have much tolerance for people who don’t return his politeness in kind, and can quickly make people feel unwelcome and threatened if he doesn’t like them. His day-to-day personality is mild and almost boring, but he is loyal and he cares a lot for his friends and the people he has taken under his wing. He takes his duty as head delinquent very seriously and makes sure that he always has enough time to mediate any disputes among his followers. He tends to think things through and because of this he usually will succeed; though people that are put off by his “gangster-ish” appearance tend to think him slow-witted. He isn’t the smartest student in Japan, but he’s a dedicated hard worker who has the special ability of being able to find the motivation to do the smallest things. Like his tendency to think things through, he is very thorough and dutiful and always makes sure to finish tasks like chores and studying. He’s also quite organized, both mentally and physically, which is a trait that his friends joke around with him a lot about, comparing him to a housewife or some such. Since his parents both work, he’s responsible and used to doing things like cooking dinner, cleaning, and helping out at his mother’s bakery. Upon getting to know Shougo, many people tend to peg him as the essence of a fair-minded, noble Samurai lord. He has a certain presence that is reminiscent of nobility is noble and fair, and possesses a simple, earnest, hardworking charisma that draws followers to him. He dislikes people who view him as "Just another good for nothing punk," even though is dress style paints him that way. He has a slight aversion to guns, since he’s never used them before and feels unsettled around them. He is also slightly hindered when making split second decisions because of his ability to take time to think things through. He also has a weakness for protecting his friends when in danger, which means he doesn’t have a very strong survival instinct. He’s not particularly cunning either, and is typically a straightforward personality.

    Character Appearance:

Shougo is slightly tall for his race at 180cm and broad shouldered. He has well defined muscles and because of this cannot properly be called slim. One word that fits him like a glove is “angular,” he seems made of sharp planes and angles, which gives him a sort of savage good looks. He has light skin and black hair, which is styled to spike out in the right places, a look he saw in a manga once and liked. His face is ovular and angular as opposed to round, and his default expression is neutral. His eyes tend to narrow, which gives him the appearance of being angry, and to top it off he wears red-orange contacts because he thinks they look cool. His left ear is pierced with a silver skull stud. Generally he dresses in a tight-fit, soft t-shirt and slim black bootcut jeans over his trusty engineer boots. His current shirt is black with a Japanese style red and grey design over his heart. He wears a studded metal belt and 2 silver wallet chains as well as a pair of studded black leather sweatbands and a variety of silver chain link bracelets and necklaces, most of which are imitation silver and made of some common metal. He keeps his motorcycle gloves tucked into the right side of his belt. He favors a pair of thin black metal framed, orange lensed sunglasses.

    Other Physical Characteristics:

Physically, he is graceful and strong. His depth perception is good and he doesn’t waste unnecessary movement. In fact, when standing still, he doesn’t move at all. This ability to naturally not fidget would be perfect for escaping notice except for the fact that by nature his appearance screams for attention. He’s a strong fighter who utilizes mostly Judo and boxing along with a heavy dose of street-learned brawling techniques. His specialty is punching and he has a very powerful right straight. He favors his right hand somewhat in combat but is able to use his left hand well. He utilizes a lot of Judo throws, which can be absolutely devastating to his opponents when they are thrown onto hard surfaces like concrete. He is also proficient in kicking, making extra use of his heavy boots. He prefers to jump kick because he thinks it’s cool, but he’s smart about his fighting and makes sure he’s not sacrificing any openings when he does something flamboyant. In terms of fairness, he fights with a reasonable amount of honor but relies on tricks if things look really bad for him.
Another notable feature is that he’s somewhat heavily tattooed. Both of his biceps are wrapped in red-gold dragons with the heads terminating on his shoulders. His back has a Scottish claymore point down along his spinal cord with feathered angel wings that stretch across his shoulder blades and a banner-type scroll under the wings but in the same place that says “V A L K Y R I E” over part of the sword. The sword’s point terminates at his lower back and the tip of the pommel extends up his neck. He has the kanji for “satsuriku” (slaughter, annihilation) tattooed over his heart, surrounded by stylized scrollwork which spreads outward like a sun burst from the center of his left pectoral, which stretches over the top of his abs and part of his right pec. The rest of his skin is untouched, and all of his tattoo work is done with red-orange ink with black highlights.

    Character connections:

Best Friend: Yamatogawa Moritaka, but everyone calls him Yamato. He's been hanging out with Shougo and occasionally Misaki since they were kids. A natural-born second-placer, Yamato realized that he'd be living in Shougo's shadow for his entire high school life, but he thinks so highly of Shougo that he really could care less. Shougo for his part considers Yamato an inseparable companion, and whenever Shougo gets into trouble somehow, Yamato's always there right along side him. In a Japanese comedy duo, Yamato would be the "jab man" or "idiot" while Shougo would be the "straight man." Yamato is a fun, playful person who enjoys four things in life: ecchi, video games, beating people up, and lazing around. Yamato is a few inches shorter than Shougo, with brown hair styled like some pop-rock idol (a haircut he believes will help him attract girls), a few earrings, and a habit of speaking in delinquent slang with just a little too much gusto. He's roguishly handsome (more so than Shougo, one of the points Yamato relishes), but girls tend to avoid him because he comes off as a little too much of a bad boy.

Love Interest: Hanamura Misaki. Shougo's childhood friend, she grew up next door to him. Her mother, her only surviving parent, is best friends with Shougo's mother and they hang out almost constantly (Misaki's mom runs a flower shop over which she and Misaki live, right next to the bakery that Shougo's mother owns). Misaki is a calm, gentle, optimistic girl, the essence of pureness and naivete. She helps run a school club that practices activities like flower arrangement and tea ceremony, and plays a little piano and violin in her free time (borrowed from the school, of course). She is the motherly type who always carries band-aids in her school bag for when Shougo and Yamato get in fights and always scolds them afterwards. I got lazy so here's a picture reference.
