Imperial Food Production

One of the first obstacles the Empire encountered in its expansion was the need to feed the huge population centers it was creating. At first, they simply utilized a system whereby entire worlds were devoted to food production and the food supplies were then shipped out to the various worlds. However, the First Emperor, seeing that this created too much of a possibility for instability, had the Research Labs cook up the zganta a food plant that can grow anywhere - even in the void of space - and that can produce nutritious fruits solely using solar energy. There are numerous variations on this fruit, as some of the races conquered by the Empire radically vary in their nutritional requirements. Because of this plant, the staple food of the Empire is mostly this fruit, cooked in one way or another. For this reason, the concept of 'the starving masses' is alien to the Imperial outlook.
